ABSTRACT
The prevalence of Malaria and typhoid fevers as co-infection
among patients attending Living Word Mission Hospital Aba, Abia State, was
studied between the months of May and November, 2008.Out of 150 blood samples
collected and examined revealed that children between the age group of 1-15
years showed the highest rate of infection in both malaria (39.3%) and typhoid
(35.3%) while 60 and above had the least (13.9%). 172 respondents revealed an
overall infection rate of 100% as children between 1-15 years had the highest
rate of infection (41 .9%) while the age group of 60 and above are the least
infected (5.8%). There is a significant difference between the age group at
P>O.05. About 55.3% believed that mosquito bite is the possible cause of
malaria and typhoid infection while about 10.1% agreed that it is caused by
excessive fried food and intake of contaminated water. 45% claimed not to have
any reason for not attending hospital when they are sick, 16.9% could not
attend hospital due to poverty. 25% agreed that routine treatments with drugs
are better preventive measures while 6.9% considered the use of insecticides in
homes as a preventive measure. The need for education with appropriate personal
hygiene were recommended and free typhoid and malaria treatment as well as free
treated bed nets distributed to the people.
