ABSTRACT
The
prevalence oftrypanosomiasis in cattle at slaughter was determined using
clinical signs and parasitological techniques at Ubakala Abattoir, Abia State,
Nigeria between May and September, 2018. A total of 100 cattle were tested
using standard trypanosome detection technique (STD) and concentration methods
for parasite detection. Cattle were grouped based on their sex, age and health
status after examination. Data were converted to percentage and analyzed using
the 2010 MSExcel spreadsheet. Tiypasoma congolense (54.00%) was the most
prevalent species followed by T. vivax (33.00%) and the least was T. brucei
(13.00%). The total trypanosomiasis infection rate was 15.00% with bulls
(14.63%) and cows (15.25%). Irrespective of sex, the infection rates were
8.00%, 13.00% and 20.00% for cattle below 1 year, 1 to 3 years and above 3
years, respectively. Data also showed that the infection prevalence increases
with reduction the health condition ofthe cattle.
