Prevalence Of Trichomonas Vagina Us Among Female Students Of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
An epiderniological study was conducted on the prevalence and intensity of
Trichoinonas vaginal/s among female students of Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State. A total of 150 urine samples from students aged
16-27 years were collected and examined by direct wet mount microscopy. The
overall prevalence was 20%. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference
in the distribution of the infection with respect to age. In terms of intensity / rate of
infection, the total of 30 infected individual had 7 symptomatic and 23
asymptomatic patients. There is significant difference between the symptomatic
and asymptomatic in terms of rate of infection. Poor personal hygiene and sanitary
behavior is one of the factors enhancing the transmission of this trophozoite
protozoan. Poverty among high risk young women is another factor. Many had
hiken to prostitution or at least keep multiple sex partners to make ends meet. As
such, stringent approaches through health and sex education, high level of
environmental sanitation, personal hygiene and effective chemotherapy will be
active in eradicating the parasitic scourge.
