ABSTRACT
Schistosomiasis
is a water borne snail mediated parasitic disease which affects over 200
million people residing in rural and agricultural areas. Cercariae is a larval
stage of schistosomal or trematodal development, which are shed from infected
snails in to water from where they penetrate the skin of people in the water.
In other to detect the prevalence of schistosoma species cercariae, 205
freshwater snail intermediate hosts were collected from Ebele stream of
OnuInyang area of Bende, Abia State. This was done from September to November
2013 and was screened. The highest collected snails numbered 97 (47.3%) of
Oncomelania species followed by 50 (24.4%) of Bulimis globusits, 40 (19.5%) of
Physa marmorata and the least collected of 18 (8.8%) of Biomphalaria glabrata.
There was significant assoqiation in prevalence between the first collection
and second collection and their examination for each month for the freshwater
snails with calculated X2cai = 10.71, for the first collection and X“ca| =
88.99, (P < 0.05) second collection. Positive results were obtained having
total number of cercariae infection in snails to be 86 (41.93% ofinfection).
The research work revealed the prevalence of Schistosoma cercariae in some
snails found inside the studied stream
