Prevalence Of Lymphatic Filariasis In Three Community In Bende Local Government Area Of Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
A study on the prevalence of lymphatic filarasis was conducted in three communities in Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. A total of 320 questionnaires were distributed out of which only 290 (90.62%) were returned. Night blood samples were collected from the 290 respondents, made up of 131 males and 159 females, and examined for the presence of microfilaria. Microfilaria was absent in all the blood samples examined thus giving a 0.00% prevalence rate ' by microfilaraemia. Using clinical examination, one case of lymphoedema (of the legs) was identified giving an overall prevalence rate of 0.34% of lymphatic filariasis. The signs and symptoms that were present include breast pain, skin rashes, fever, headache, chills, musculoskeletal pain (MSP), nausea, open sore, ey problems and total blindness. Some of these signs are pointers to the presence of onchocerciasis in the study area. This therefore suggests that. lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis could he CO-endemic in the communities studied. A good number of the respondents (98.97%) had no idea as to the cause of the infection while 3 different individuals attributed it to crossing a body olwater at old age, working heavily under the sun or through bad blood.
