Prevalence Of Liver Fluke (Fasciola Hepatica) Slaughtered In Some Cattle In Wurukum Abattoir, Makurdi Benue State:- Ike Cynthia Ebere M.
ABSTRACT
This
research addressed the prevalence of liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) in some
slaughtered cattle using Wurukum abattoir in Benue State as a case study. On
the whole, two hundred and ten (210) cattle were inspected and faecal samples
collected from them. Fifty eight (58) livers were also examined during post
mortem inspection for Fasciola. Out of the 210 faecal samples collected, 92
males and 118 females were examined using sedimentation techniques. A
Significant difference was found among the female 1 I 8 (65. l %) and male 92
(34.9%). The examination of the liver involved actual post mortem inspection on
the slaughtered cattle. Out of 58 livers inspected, there was a higher
prevalence of liver fluke in male 28(62.2%) than in female 17 (37.8%). It was
observed that most diseased liver (livers with Fasciola hepatica) were not
totally condemned. However, prompt chemotherapy of live animals before
slaughter with improved meat inspection qualities by veterinary workers and
incineration of condemnable carcasses should be put into consideration in
reducing public health problems.
