Prevalence Of Gastro Intestinal Parasites Of Domestic Pigs In Selected Pig Farms In Umudike, Ikwuano L.G.A, Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria.
ABSTRACT
The current
study on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of pigs carried out in
different farms in umuahia, Abia state from May-July, 2018. A total of 151 pigs
feacal samples were collected randomly from piglets, growers and adults of both
sexes. The microscopic examination was done using sedimentation methods. The prevalence
of the pig feacal samples based on the pig's age indicated that Adults recorded
the highest prevalence rate of 58 % , piglets recorded 23.2%, lastly by growers
18.8% respectively. A total of (6) different parasites were seen during the
study. They include; Strongyloides ransomi (36.6%)which has the highest
infection rate followed by Balantidium coli (23.2%), Trichuris suis (15.2%),
Ascaris suum (10.7%), Oesophagostomum spp (8.0%) and Taeniasolium (6.3%). The
prevalence based on sex of pig indicated that the female recorded the highest
prevalence rate of 58.3% while male recorded the prevalence rate of 43.7%.
Lastly, In respect to (4) different farms recorded that Saiky farms had
40(26.5%) followed by Dike farms 36(23.8%), Grace farm 40 (26.5%) while Mouau
had the least prevalent rate of 35(23.2%). Gastrointestinal parasitic
infections still remain as constraint to a major impediment and profitable
livestock production. Prevention control and reduction to mortality, morbidity
and transmission were given in the recommendation.
