Preliminary Assessment Of Some Plant Extracts As Inhibitors Of Egg - Hatch In Meloidogyne Spp.
ABSTRACT
A laboratory study on the effectiveness of leaf water extracts from ten locally collected plants (Cymbopogon citratus, RauwoljIa vornitoria, Vernon/a arrnygclalina, Urena lobata, Piper guineense, Ocim urn gratissirnurn, Car/ca papaya, Chrorno/aena odorata, Sida acuta and Fleurya aestuans.) as inhibitors of egg-hatch of Meloidogyne spp. were assessed. Vernonia arrnygdalina, Carica papaya, Rciuwolfla iornitoria, and synthetic nematicide (Carbofuran) achieved complete egg-hatch inhibition. However the results were not significantly different from Chrornolaena odorata, Piper guineense, Sida acuta, Cymbopogon citratus, Ocirntirn gratissirnurn. Fleurya aestuans and Urena lobata. All the plant extracts used were excellent inhibitors of egg-hatch of Meloidogyne spp. The extracts of test plants used in this study, which are commonly found locally, could be possible replacement for synthetic nematicides to solve the nematode problem of resource poor farmers.
