Abstract
This study examined the parental factors
influencing counselling career choice as perceived by secondary school students
in llorin Metropolis of Kwara Slate. Three research questions- were raised and
three hypotheses were formulated for the study. The descriptive survey research
design was used. The population of the study consisted of 2022 secondary school
students in llorin Metropolis of Kwara State. Samples of 250 students were
selected using proportionate stratified smple random sampling technique. The
research questionnaire was a standardized test named "Motivation of
Occupational Preference Scale" (MOPS) developed by Bakare and was used to
collect data on demographic variables and occupational preferences of students.
The instrument was modified and subjected to face validation by two research
experts and had reliability indices of O. 74. The data collected were analysed
using the mean and standard deviation and analysis of covariance. The results
of the analysed data revealed that mothers, father and students occupation have
influence on students perceptions of factors influencing career choice among
students in llorin metropolis, that there was a significant difference, on the
basis of fathers'occupation, in the students ‘perception of the factors
influencing career choice among secondary school students in llorin Metropolis.
There is no significant difference on the basis of mother's occupation in
students ' perception of the factors influencing career choice among students'
in llorin metropolis. From the aforementioned findings, the following
recommendations were made. That career development programmes should be
developed and encouraged in secondary schools. That professionally trained
counsellors, should be appointed, deployed and given free hands to function in
