ABSTRACT
Length-weight relationship and condition
factors of I 00 specimen of African Sharp tooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
caught from Oron river (fresh water)were studied. The total length of the fish
ranged from 17.0cm to 85.0cm with a corresponding weight range of 100g to
8250g. The parameters "a" {regression constant) and "b"
(regression coefficient) of the length-weight relationship were estimated using
the formula W=al, while the condition factor was calculated from the equation -
The length and L weight of the fish were positively related with correlation
coefficients "r" of 0.843,0.757 and 0.561 for males, females and
combined sexes respectively. The regression equation cdtculated from the
logarithm of length- weight data for the males and females combined was
logW=-0.301+2.679logL.The b" values for the males, females and combined
sexes were 2.55, 2.00 and 2.97. indicating negative allometric growth. The
"k" values for the males, females and combined sexes were 5.824x10',
8.747x10'° and 1.767x109 respectively. The determination of "b" and
" can be useful tools in assessing the well being and growth performance
of fish.
