Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent leadership styles of school principals serve as correlate of teachers' job performance in secondary schools in Abia State. To achieve the aforementioned objective, three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a correlational research design. A total of 406 respondents which comprised 385 teachers and 21 duty principals that were drawn from the entire population of 4064 respondents (3,853 teachers and 211 duty principals} through two-stage sampling techniques made up the sample for the study. Two instruments titled "Leadership Styles of School Principals Questionnaire (LSSPQ)" and "Secondary School Teachers' Job Performance Questionnaire (SSTJPQ)" were developed, validated and used for the study. The internal consistency reliability of the instruments were calculated using Cronbach Alpha procedure and reliability estimates of .78 and .83 were obtained for the LSSPQ and SST JPQ respectively. Linear regressions was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. Results revealed as follows: A very high positive and significant relationship exists between the leadership styles (autocratic, bureaucratic and laissezfaire leadership styles) and teachers' job performances in secondary schools It was thus recommended that school principals should be educated on the importance of leadership styles in teachers' job performance.
