ABSTRACT
The inhibition of the corrosion of mild steel in HCI by Ampicillin and cloxacillin have been studied using weight loss, Gasometric, IR, and thermometric methods. The result shows variation of weight loss with time and evolution of hydrogen gas for the corrosion of mild steel in various concentrations of HCl at temperatures of 303K and 333k for cloxacillin and Ampicillin, the inhibition efficiencies of the inhibitors increased with increase in concentration but decrease with increase temperature. The absorption characteristics of these inhibitors are best described by Frumkin adsorption isotherm and the mechanism of adsorption of the inhibitors on the surface of mild steel is physical adsorption, exothermic and spontaneous. The kinetics of the corrosion of mild steel in HCl in the absence and presence of various concentrations of these inhibitors is first order. The IR spectra revealed that there is interaction between the inhibitors and the surface of the mild steel and that adsorption occurred via — OH bond Cloxacillin and Ampicillin are good adsorption inhibitors for the corrosion of mild steel in HCI.
