Information Retrieval System (A Case Study Of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Uniudike And Rhema University, Aba)
ABSTRACT
The study looked at
the information retrieval system in MOUAU and Rhema university libraries
located in the south eastern geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Five research
questions were formulated to guide the study. A total of 21,214 students were
used as the sample frame, a simple random sampling technique was used to draw a
1086 respondents for the study. Of the 1068 questionnaires distributed, 681
were duly filled and returned for the study. The instrument used to collect
data for the study was a well structured questionnaire. The findings of the
study shows that MOUAU is using a manual information retrieval system, while
Rhema university library uses an automated information retrieval system.. The
findings revealed that the purpose for using the retrieval systems includes
among others, to provide users with information or documents of their interest.
The study recommended that MOUAU should adopt the use of automated information
retrieval system, it also recommended that facilities and infrastructure such
as adequate power supply should be made available to both MOUAU and Rhema
university libraries, to support the automated systems and on-the-job training
should be organised for library staff to enable them keep abreast of
development in retrieval systems.
