Abstract
This study aims to investigate the Information
Needs and Information Seeking Behaviour of Undergraduate Students of Library
and Information Science, Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike. The
study was guided by six specific objectives and six research questions. The
descriptive survey descriptive research design was usedfor the study. The study
population consisted of 373 undergraduate students of library and information
science department and sampling technique was usedfor the study. A sample size
of149(40%) students was drawnfor the study. A four point rating scale
questionnaire was usedfor data collection. A total of 149 questionnaire was
distributed, of which a total of 117 copies was duly filled, returned and
usedfor analysis. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics
ofmean scores and standard deviation with the use ofStatistical Package for
Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The studyfound that undergraduate students
oflibrary and information science have varying information needs. The study
also found that there are available and unavailable information materials in
the library and that the students derive satisfactionfrom the use ofthese
materials and are not satisfied with the use of others. The study showed that
students employ certain means in meeting their information needs and that there
are factors affecting the information seeking behaviour which include poor
service from library staff, lack ofrelevant materials, unconducive environment
and inadequate power supply. The study also revealed that adequate power
supply, conducive environment and employment of qualified library staffwill
improve the information seeking behaviour ofundergraduate students oflibrary
and information science.
