ABSTRACT

This study focused on the influence of Home Environment on the Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School Students in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Ahia State, Nigeria. The study specifically, ascertained the influence of sibling pressure on the academic performance of student in senior secondary schools in Umuahia North LGA; examined the influence of home location on the academic performances of students in senior secondary schools in Umuahia North LGA; examined the influence of the family structure on the academic performances of students in senior secondary schools in Umuahia North LGA: suggested ways of enhancing academic performance of students in the home. The study was a survey research. The sample size of the study was 100 SSII students of 10 senior secondary schools. Data for the study was collected using well-structured questionnaires which was subjected to content and face validation and administered to the respondents chosen from the study area, to elicit primary information. Mean was used to analyze the data collected from the respondents. Results from the study showed that home location is influential to senior secondary school students' academic performance. This study discovers that students homes location influences their performance in school this is was decided because the majority of the mean responses of the respondents are above the criterion level of 2.50 set as bench mark for acceptance. The findings also indicated that family structure can enhance the academic performances of students this is was decided because the majority of the mean responses of the respondents are above the criterion level of 2.50 set as bench mark for acceptance. The findings of this study also indicated that sibling pressure had a no influence on the academic performance of senior secondary students this is was decided because the majority of the mean responses of the respondents are below the criterion level of 2.50 set as bench mark for acceptance. From the findings a number of ways to improve the academic performances of students were suggested which includes the provisions of adequate educational materials to the students, and the teaching/supervision of the students work at home by parents. From the study, major recommendation, were suggested which include parents should endeavor to encourage and give their children/wards adequate time to read and do their home works at home rather than engaging them with domestic works and watching of non- educational movies most of the time.
