Influence Of Genotype X Environment Interaction On Growth Parameters Of Rabbits In The Humid Tropics Of Nigeria:- Onyiro, Onyemauchechi M.
ABSTRACT
The influence of genotype,
environment (feed regime) and their interaction on growth traits of domestic
rabbits was investigated in a 6 x 4 factorial experiment in a randomized
complete block design (RCBD). Eighty-three kittens resulting from the following
pure Dutch, NZW x CHA, NZW x DUT and CHA x DUT. There were two parities. Four
feeding regimes were designed as follows: Ad libitum concentrate + forage. Ad
libitum concentrate + 20% restricted forage, 20% restricted forage. Depending
on the number weaned, one, two or three kittens from each of the different
genotypes were randomly assigned to each of the feeding regimes. Each body weight
(BW), body length(BL), heart girth (HG), head-to-shoulder (HS),
shoulder-to-tail drop(STD), hind limb (HL), ear length (EL) and height at
withers (HTW) were collected both before weaning (3-10 weeks) and after weaning
(11-18 weeks). There were significant differences (P<0.05) among the genotypes at the different ages. Chinchilla purebred for most of the growth parameters studied and at most ages, followed by New Zealand among feed regimes for all growth traits were not significant (P>0.05).
The interaction not significant (P>0.05) for all body traits measured.
Regressions of body weight on linear body measurements were all very highly
significant.
