Abstract

Malaria and hookworm infections are common in Africa and they increase the pievalence of anaemia in pregnancy with resultant poor pregnancy outcomes. This study was carried out to assess the impact of Plasmodium falciparum and hookworm infections on the frequency of anaemia among pregnant women in two rural communities in Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State. One hundred (100) pregnant women who attended antenatal clinic in the health centres of the study area were recruited for the study after due approval and consent. 45% ofthe subjects were infected with falciparum malaria, 16% ofthe subjects infected with hookworm and 10% had falciparum malaria and hookworm infection (coinfection) and 29% ofthe subjects were not infected by any of the two infections. The women within the age of 20-29 years had the highest prevalence of malaria and hookworm infections. The highest form of education for most respondents infected with malaria was secondary education 100%, there was no hook worm cases. The highest prevalence of malaria was found on the married women 38.57% and hookworm infection 1.57%. Malaria infection was highest among the pregnant women in their second trimester 56.09% and secundgravidae 33.34%. Prevalence of hookworm based on trimester and gravidity was also higher in their second trimester 12.00% and multigravidae 3.75%. Plasmodium falciparum and hookworm have significant impact on this high prevalence. This suggests that an integrated interventional program to combat both malaria and helminthes infections in our communities should be strengthened to have significant health impacts.
