ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of telecommunication on economic performance in nigeria during the period of 1981-2017. this study was carried out against the background of crucial role that telecommunication can play to influence the performance of the economy. one of the problem statement of this study was that, In Nigeria, provision of public infrastructure is grossly inadequate and poor. Necessary telecommunication services, as public infrastructure, needed for meaningful investment are lacking and, where found, are very costly. The introduction of the GSM in Nigeria was to expand the tendency in the country and to make telephone services cheaper and accessible to the common person as it had been introduced in some African countries like South Africa, Ghana, and Benin Republic among others. In addition, the fact that the trend and the revolution of the development of telecommunication (GSM) growth on Nigerian Economy have not received a great deal of attention from researchers prompted this study and it is against this background that this study has been conceived and inspired nigeria. the study also examined the impact of foreign direct investment, telecommunication and economic growth, to achieve this objectives, multiple regressions were used in analyzing the data. this regressions include unit root testing, OLS estimation, statistical test and test for autocorrelation. the empirical results shows that telecommunication is statistically significant to nigerian economic growth. due to this, some recommendations were made which include that telecommunications is an important prerequisite for participation in the modern economic universe. There is a long-standing literature attempting to gauge the economic impact of telecommunications, with the findings of Roel/er and Waverman (2015) suggesting a substantial growth dividend in OECD nations.
