ABSTRACT
Investment
climate otherwise called business environment has posed great challenges to
developmental strides in Sub Saharan African countries, Nigeria in particular.
This study examined the impact of investment climate on the profitability of
the Nigerian commercial banking sector from 1990 to 2013. The primary objective
of the study was to find out how investment climate can affect the profits of
commercial banks in Nigeria. Literature of past works were reviewed
accordingly. Data collected were analyzed using the Ordinary Least Squares
function and multiple linear regression technique. Findings in this study
revealed that insecurity in Nigeria has not negated the profitability of the
Nigerian Commercial banks using return on asset and return on equity as
measures of profitability. The study therefore recommended that the Nigerian
commercial banks should further invest in information and communication
technology in order to boost their technological and innovational base as it is
evident that the duo has enabled it escape the untold misfortune it would have
faced as a result of insecurity. It also recommended that the Nigerian business
environment should be further enhanced in order to trigger various degrees of
investments that would increase the country’s Gross Domestic Product in the
nearest future.
