ABSTRACT

The study reviewed the impact of exports on the Nigerian economy spanning from 1981 to 2018. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the impact of oil exports on economic growth in Nigeria, to ascertain the impact of non-oil exports on economic growth in Nigeria and to investigate the impact of exchange rate on economic growth in Nigeria. Unit root test, Johanson co integration and error correction mechanism were adopted in the research. Thus, revealed that; Oil exports and non-oil exports have a positive and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria, exchange rate has a negative and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria and there exist long run relationship between exports trade and economic growth in Nigeria. Based on the findings,' the study recommended that; given the study period 1981-2018, it is observed that there is positive relationship between oil exports and economic growth in Nigeria! Thus, factors that may affect the prompt production and exports oil should be adequately taken care by the government and private sector so as to boost economic growth and development in Nigeria. The government should equally look into the non-oil sector in order to boost the production capacity of the sector since there is a positive relationship between non-oil exports and economic growth in Nigeria. Exchange rate should be reduce to its minimal so as to encourage non- oil and oil exports production in Nigeria.
