ABSTRACT
Bacterial
and fungal isolates were obtained from effluents at three different palm oil
mills in Ahia State. The bacterial isolates were identified to the generic
levels as Bacillus sp, Staphylococcus sp, Pseudomonas sp, Proteus, Escherichia
sp and Micrococcus sp while fungi were also identified to the generic level as
Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillin and Saccharomyces, The bacteria were found to
utilize different hydrocarbons (crude oil, diesel oil, kerosene, gasoline) to
various degrees using three parameters(pH, total viable counts and optical
density)It was also observed that all POME bacterial grew well in media
containg in with gasoline and kerosene as sole sources of carbon while only
Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Streptococcus spp were able to grow well in diesel
oil and crude oil-containing media. For the I4-day test, bacterial growth was
reduced after the sixth day in diesel oil and crude oil and after the 14 111
day and on the 10 day in the other hydrocarbons depending on the organism It
was concluded that bacterial isolates from POME can utilize different
hydrocarbons and temperature for 14 days. Not all of the organisms utilized
hydrocarbons at the same rate and time and because of their different
spectrurns of activity, only heterotrophic bacteria can utilize hydrocarbons as
sole source of carbon for biomass and energy production ..
