ABSTRACT
Human Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs)
are considered to be a public health problem of global importance by the World
Health Organization. The present study investigated the prevalence and risk
factors of pathogenic Intestinal parasitic infection on inhabitants ofUbakala,
Umuahia South LGA Abia State from September to November 2014. A total of 400
persons made up of 214 females and 186 males within different age groups had
their stools examined for the presence of intestinal parasites. Out
of this number, 80 were infected during an overall ambprevalence
of 20.0%, four parasites were observed they include; Entamoeba
histolytica 17(21.25%), Ascaris lumbricoidcs 41(51.25%), Hook worm
18(22.50%) and Giardia lamblia 4(5.0%). More males 186(22.0%) than females
214(18.2%) were Infected. Tire age groups 10-14 years and 5-9 years
recorded the highest prevalences of 47.14% and 45.90% respectively.
With respect to location, tire highest prevalence was recorded at Nsukwe
23(24.50%), regarding marital status, widowed were more infected 18(20.0%),
regarding educational status, infection was highest among primary level of
education with 42(26.47%). Occupation related prevalence was highest among
farmers (32.35%). Those who used pit latrine for toileting had the highest rate
ofinfection (25.13%).This calls for mass chemotherapy combined with health
education and promotion needed to reduce the cycle of infection and re
infection and tire negative impact on child growth.
