ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus results in chronic hyperglycaemia, leading to defects in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Diabetes mellitus is also linked with elevated plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which may promote the development of cardiovascular disease. This study was designed to investigate the hepatic and nephron toxicity of mosquito insecticide on diabetic rats. The effect was studied on days 14 days. The experiment was designed using four groups, group I: noramal control, group 2: Diabetic control, group 3: Nonna! and exposed to insecticide and group 4: Diabetic and exposed to insecticide. Our results have shown deterioration in kidney function as evidenced by the elevation in. serum urea Nonna! and exposed to insecticide and creatinine and also elevation of MDA, sugar level and reduction in vitamin C and HDL in all diabetic insecticide exposed rats. In addition, the kidney function was reduced as indicated by the elevation in serum creatinine. Mosquito insecticide also caused a decrease in cholinesterase activity in serum, and kidney enzyme activity associated with a state of oxidative stress in all diabetic insecticide exposed rats and hyperammonemia. These results support the hazards of insesticide use and shows the importance of minimizing insesticide use or discovering new safe insecticides. The outcome was verified through histopathological investigation which demonstrated anomalies including damaged proximal and distal convoluted tubule, increase in tubular lumen, fibrosis and necrosis. Based on the outcome, it can be inferred that mosquito insecticides inflicts dose dependent damage on kidney of rats under subchronic exposure duration and hence poses a potential threat. It is therefore recommended that care should be taken whenever mosquito insecticides is used or disposed under mammalian proximity.
