ABSTRACT
An experiment was conducted at two different sites and seasons. The wet season experiment was carried out at the premises of National Soil, Plant, Fertilizer and Water Laboratory, Umudike while the dry season was conducted at National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike in 2018. The experiments were done to investigate the growth, yield, f3-carotene and proximate composition response of two orange fleshed sweetpotato varieties as influenced by different organic manure sources. The residual effect of these manure sources on cucumber growth and yield was also examined in the wet season of 2019. A supplementary experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of crushed and uncrushed goat manure on yield of sweet potato. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot arrangement in a randomized complete block design. The organic manure sources are poultry manure, rabbit manure, goat manure and no manure application. Growth parameter on vine length was recorded while yield and yield component data taken were total number of roots per plant, marke and unmarke root yields (t/ha). For proximate analysis of ash%, crude fiber%, dry matter%, moisture content%, fat%, carbohydrate% and 3-carotene content were carried out. Poultry manure produced the longest vines and superior yield, than other organic manure sources (goat and rabbit manures) in both sweet potato and residual test crop (cucumber) while crushed goat manure gave better yield than uncrushed manure. 3- carotene composition was higher in umuspo3 than Umuspol while for proximate composition umuspol had higher percentage crude fiber, carbohydrate and dry matter whereas ash% was greater in Umuspo3. Manure source also had influence on the proximate composition as goat manure increased ash%, Rabbit manure increase carbohydrate% andno manure application increased crude fiber.
