ABSTRACT

A 5x3 factorial experiment laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) was conducted at Michael Okpara University of' Agriculture, Umudike research farm in 2007 cropping season (May to August) to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer rates and intra row spacing's on growth and yield of leaf amaranth. Treatment comprised all possible combinations of five nitrogen fertilizer levels (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha) and three intra row spacing's (30, 45, 60 cm) with three replications. Nitrogen had significant (P<0.05) effect on number of leaves, number of branches, leaf dry weight and total dry weight, while plant height and shoot dry weight were net significantly different among N application. For ultra row spacing's, plant height and number of branches had no significant effect on the plan! growth attributes. Application of nitrogen significantly (P<0.05)influenced leaf fresh weight per plant, leaf yield/ha and marketable yield/ha. Yield and yield components (leaf fresh weight per plant, leaf yield/ha and marketable yield/ha) increased with increasing N rate up to 90 kg/ha and thereafter declined, while intra row spacing showed significant (P<0.05) effect on yield with 60 cm producing the highest yield.
