Growth And Yield Responses Of Fluted PumpKin (Telfairia Occidentalis Hook To Organic Manure Sources And Rates In An Ultisol Of.South-Eastern Ngeria.
ABSTRACT
The experiment was carried out in the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Research farm in 2006 and 2007 cropping season to investigate the growth and yield responses of fluted pumpkin to sources and rates of organic manure in an ultisol of south eastern Nigeria. The organic manure sources (poultry, goat and cowdUng) were applied at rates of 5,10,15,20 tlha. The experimental design was a 3 x 4 factorial .with 12 treatment combinations plus one control with three replicates. The result of the experiment in both years showed significant (p<0.05) differences among manure sources and rate effects on the different parameters. The longest vine was observed with poultry manure at 20 tlha in both years. Highest fresh leaf and marketable yields were associated with poultry manure at 15 tfha in 2006 and 20 tlha in 2007, where as the performance was lowest with no manure application. Pod angth, diameter, number of pods per plant were not influenced by manure source, rate and their interaction in both years but the heaviest pod was produced by poultry manure at 10 t/ha in 2007. The highest number of seeds were produced by poultry manure at 15 tlha in 2006 and 20 t/ha lowest by cowdung in 2007. In the ratoon crop, poultry manure at 20 tlha gave the highest number of iaaves per plant, highest leaf and marketable yields whereas the least number of leaves and yields were observed with no manure application. Applictlon of poultry manures at 20 t/ha was considered most suitable for the utization of fluted pumpkin for optimum growth and development.
