Gastro Intestinal Helminths Of Cattle In Okigwe Mainslaughter House (Garki) Imo State, Nigeria.
ABSTRACT
Gastrointestinal helminths of cattle include nematodes, cestodes and trematodes. They are mainly found in the abomasums, small intestine and large intestine. Infections are wide spread, but majority of cattle infected with these parasites showed little and sometimes obvious clinical signs, throughout their productive life. Partly for this reason, infections with gastrointestinal and other helminthes parasites are among the most neglected areas of veterinary care in most of the developing world (Hansen and Perry, 1994). The losses from parasitic infections are primarily due to sub clinical effects mainly in young animals, which include reduced weight gains, carcass or organ condemnation at slaughter, decreased feed (conversion) and delays in reaching breeding age. Numerous abattoir data and clinical reports from Africa have highlighted the economic and health importance of gastroenteritis, cystecercosis, fasciolosis and oesophagostomosis in ruminant livestock (Assoku, 1983; Tembely, 1986;Chiejina, 1986; Anderson, 1988; 1993; Getachew, 1994; Ofukwu and Okwori, 2000; Folorunso and Ogunsusi, 2000; Okoli, 200 1;Okoli eta!, 2001).
