Extent Of Automation In Academic Library: A Comparative Study Of Abia State University Uturu Library And Abia State Polytechnic Aba Library:- Kalu, Priscilla C
ABSTRACT
This
study, investigated the Extent of Automation in Academic Library making a
Comparative Study ofAbia State University Library, Uturu and Abia State
Polytechnic Library, Aba, Nigeria. The study was guided by five specific
objectives andfive research questions. Descriptive survey research design was
usedfor the study. The studypopulation consisted of80 staffofboth libraries so
staffin both academic libraries were used as the population of the study. This
also formed the sample size ofthis study. The instrument usedfor the study is a
questionnaire which was validated by lecturers in both library and information
science and education department. Data were collected and analyzed using
descriptive statistics offrequency, percentage and mean scores with the use
ofstatistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. A four point
rating scale questionnaire was used for data collection. The study revealed
that in the types of automated library services available, ABSU library has
more automated library services than Abia Polytechnic Library. Services like
cataloguing, circulation, classification and serials have been automated in
ABSU library. The study also revealed that there are varied extent of
availability of different ICT facilities in the study areas. The study revealed
also that library staffin the two libraries studiedpossesses very high extent
ofsome skills required in using automated resources but were faced with some
problems such as database conversion problems, poor findings, poor state of
power. Consequently, the study recommended thatfunding be improved in the
libraries, database conversion be addressed and stafftraining among others..
