ABSTRACT

The pulverized seeds of three 3) indigenous plants, namely: Jatropha curcas,

Thevetia peruviana and Piper guineense as well as permethrin (coopex grain dust) a

synthetic insecticide were evalu- td under laboratory conditions for their relative

toxicities to Maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Mot.). Maize grains weighing 50g were

treated with the plant powder and the synthetic insecticide at the rates of 0.5g, 2.5g,

and 5.Og by weight of the plant powder and then infested with 10 adult weevils. The

comparative effectiveness of each of the plant powder and permethrin (coopex grian

dust) were assessed ' counting weevils mortality at 24 hours, 7 days, 14 days, 21

days and 28 days post reatmerL.

The weevil perforation index (W P I ) was assessed at 60 days post treatment. The

result were subjected to staUstic analysis after transforming the data using square

root method and the ANOVA - c te significant means were separated using the

DNMRT. The permethrin, a synhtic insecticides (coopex grain dust) proved to be

very effective (toxic) among al! the treatments. Among the botanicals, Piper guineense

was the most effective, followed h Thevetia and Jatropha curcas.

Based on the weevil perforation index (W P I ), all the treatments showed positive

protectant effect except the Jatroria curcus at 0.5g by weight of the plant powder

which showed negativt otecta'it effect. The botanicals with positive protectant

effects have potentials as seec rrctant against Sitophilus zeamais (Mot.).
