Evaluation Of Some Cultivars Of Vegetable Cowpea ( Vigna Unguiculata Var Unguiculata) For Yield And Yield Components
ABSTRACT
Twelve cultivars of vegetable cowpea were screened for yield and yield attributes in a field experiment conducted at the Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike experimental farm. The cultivars were laid out in a randomized complete block design [RCBD] in three replicates during the 2004 cropping season and, data were collected on the following attributes: plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, pod weight, pod length, pod width, number of pods per m2, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight, and pod yield in tonnes per hectare. Analysis of variance showed a highly significant difference among the cultivars studied [P<O.001J. Pod yield per hectare was positively and significantly associated with number of pods per m2[r =0.700; P<0.01] and 100 seed weight [r =0.410; P<O.O5J respectively some of the attributes were positively and significantly associated with each other. While the other were negatively associated. The implication of this result is discussed in terms of improvement in this important pulse.
