ABSTRACT

Soybeans like other legumes are vital for maintaining soil productivity over long periods through their ability to fix atmospheric Nitrogen in the soil. Green house experiment was conducted to determine Nitrogen fixing capacities of different soybean cultivars on an acid soil of Umudike in south eastern Nigeria. Five different soybean cultivars and a control crop (early maturing rice) were used for the study. None of the cultivars received any fertilizer application. The design was completely randomised design (CRD) with 10 replicates. Measurements were taken 4 weeks after emergence on the number of plants/pot, number of leaves and plant height. At 6 weeks, the crops were harvested and the number of nodules for the plants were counted. Root and shoot dry matter were also determined. Laboratory analysis were conducted to determine the total Nitrogen in the soil before planting and after harvest and also on the root and shoot dry matter.
