Evaluation Of Haematological And Serum Biochemical Indices Of West African Dwarf (Wad) Goats Fed With Panicum Maximum And Different Browses
ABSTRACT
A fifty six (56) day feeding trial using 12 West African Dwarf (WAD) goats aged 6-8 months was conducted to ça1uate the Haematological and serum Biochemical indices of goats fed J5anicum maximum and different browses supplemented with concentrate diet. The 12 WAD goats were divided into four treatment groups designated A, B, C and D. Each treatment group consisted of 3 goats, each goat representing a replicate in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The animals were fed twice a day morning and afternoon and water given ad-libitum. The results showed that there were no significant (P>0.05) differences in Haematological Parameters except Neutrophil, lymphocyte and MCV (P<0.05) among the treatment groups with the values 49.67, 41.00, 48.00, 37.00% for neutrophil in group A, B, C and D respectively and 45.00, 56.67, 51.00, 60.00% for lymphocyte and 17.28, 18.22, 16.03, 18.35 (fl) for MCV. The results also showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in biochemical parameters except in BUN in which treatment groups A and D (P<0.05) were higher with values 21.04 and 22.13 (mg/dl) respectively. Glucose levels were higher (P<0.05) in treatment group C than the control (A) group 46.67 and57.33 (mg/dl) respectively. The result also suggest good immune response and protein utilization of the animals fed with the experimental diets and can be concluded that the combination of these browses and grass are very essential in WAD goat production.
