ABSTRACT
Okro is an annual to a biennial
vegetable and usually propagated by ScC(ls. World production of okro as a fresh
fruit vegetable is estimated at 500,000 600,00() tonmies annually based on
available consumption data. Ihe immature fruits arc used as vegetables, either
boiled or fried and are particularly popular for adding to soup amid stew.
Mature pods contain mucilaginous substances which make consumption ideal for

seeds being threshed out from their pods much latcr as required for planting in
the next SCSOfl and other purposes. 'I'he main groups are short and long
duration cultivars. The short duration have short stem and fruits ail(l takes 3
months to ripen. •flie long duration cultivars have long stein and take about 6
months to ripen. The ilLiiflCO1IS cultivars vary iii time 0 maturity, colour of
leaves, stein length, shape of fruit.
