ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of workplace environment on workers performance in radio stations in Abia state, Nigeria. Many organizations, firms and industries predominantly in Africa, still operate in an unfriendly and unhealthy work environment. These include poorly designed work station, unsuitable furniture, inappropriate lighting, excessive noise and lack of personal protective equipment’s etc. Beyond the broad objective, the study sought specifically to identify the workplace environmental factors that affect the employees' performance, assess the effect of the workplace environment on employee performance and establish if there is relationship between workplace environment and employee performance. A total of 94 management and non management staff of the four (4) radio stations in Abia state namely, Broadcasting Corporation of Abia state, Pace Setter Fm radio Umuahia, Abia state, Vision African Radio Umuahia, Abia state and Love Fm Radio Umuahia Abia state were selected using stratified sampling technique from which data and information were elicited using the questionnaire. Analytically, the study employed descriptive statistics in attainment of specific objectives and employed Chi-square, and Pearson's correlation in testing the hypotheses. The result of the analysis revealed that Work place environmental factor does have significant effect in employee's performance in radio stations in Abia state, Nigeria, General office design and comfort does affect employee's performance in radio stations in Abia state, Nigeria and there is a strong positive relationship between employee performance and work place environment. The study therefore concludes that Office or work environment designed and furnished with the employees in mind will adequately support and induce optimum performance.
