Effect Of Relative Sowing Time On The Growth, Yield And Yield Components Of Grain Amaranth And Okra In Amaranth/Okra Intercropping System.
ABSTRACT
The compatibility of grain amaranth and okra intercrops and the effect of variation in the relative sowing time of component crops in grain amaranth/okra intercropping systems were examined in 2003 cropping seasons at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike farm. Okra was either sown the same day as amaranth, two, three or four weeks after amaranth. Intercropping reduced the growth and yield of grain amaranth and okra relative to their sole crops. However, okra when sown 3 or 4 weeks after amaranth did not flower at all and therefore no pod was produced. Comparative assessment of amaranth/okra mixtures suggests that it is better to introduce amaranth and okra on the same day because yield advantage was higher (4 1%) in planting them same day, compared to 04% when okra was sown 2 weeks after amaranth. There were even disadvantages of intercropping them by sowing okra 3 or 4 weeks after grain amaranth. The results were discussed in light of competitive abilities of the various components of the mixtures. Key words: Amaranth — Okra — Intercropping Relative sowing time.
