ABSTRACT

A field experiment was conducted during the 2005 cropping season at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike research farm to determine the effect of plant density on the yield and yield components of local cultivars of okra: Awgu Early, Akapopo and Akupia. The experiment was laid out in a factorial fashion in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The three local cultivars were grown at four planting densities: I ,000,00() stands/ha, 500,000 stands/ha, 333,333 stands/ha and 250,000 stands/ha. There was no significant variety x density interaction in all the attributes studied. High density planting produced high number of fruits per hectare and yield (kg/ha) while yield per plant was higher with lower density. Results obtained from this study indicated that higher plant density gave higher yield per area. On the oilier hand, higher density tends to produce small mature sized fruits. In okra markets, small sized fruits are of advantage since large sized fruits are looked at as fibrous. Space economy is ensured, hence, there is maximum utilization of a small unit area of land to produce high yield using close spacing. From the finding 1,000,000 stands/ha is recommended for high yield of short and early maturing chinars of okra.
