ABSTRACT

 A study was conducted to determine the effect of different levels of NPK (12:12:12) on growth and yield of mungbean (Vigna radiata. L. Wilczek) in Umudike — a humid forest zone of Nigeria. The treatments were 0kg, 75kg, 150kg, 225kg and 300kg/ha of NPK (12:12:12) fertilizer were applied to mungbean variety NM92 sown in randomized complete block design in the research field of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike from March to May 2006. There were improvements in the vegetative characters including the plant height and number of days to flowering and podding. A significant difference existed in the yield and yield components of the plants with those applied with 225kg/ha giving the highest yield of 1.97t/ha. This was followed by those given 300kg/ha (1.91t/ha), 150kg/ha (1.83t/ha), 75kg/ha (1.80t/ha) and the control (1.31t/ha). The conclusion is that mungbean has shown good responses in growth, yield and yield components with the application of NPK (12:12:12) to warrant further trials.
