ABSTRACT

The study examine Effect of Nigerian Public Expenditures on Economic Growth in Nigeria, using

time series analysis spanning froni 2005-2016. The data set were analyzed using Ordinaiy Least Squares

(OLS, multiple regression technique. From the results, it was found that Increase in Government

Transfers Expenditure and Social and Community Service Expenditure will lead to a positive

increase in gross domestic product which in turn affect economic growth, also, increase in

Government Administration Expenditure will have negative and insignificant effect on economic

growth. But increase in Government Economic Service Expenditure will have positive but

increases insignIcantly on gross national product. This reveals that within the country, sonic

government spending has been on the increase without a corresponding increase in some areas of

economic development in Nigerian economy. Therfore, the study recommends that (i,) the government

should increase their level of spending on Transfers Expenditure and Social and Community

Service Expenditure to instigate a prop Jtionate increase in economic develpment. (ii,,

Government should make tactful invest toward economic service to rise proportional increase in

the national income (income elastic wants) which will thus result in a relative expansion of the

public sector to become positive and significant on gross domestic product.
