ABSTRACT

The topic of this research work is Effect of Direct Statutory Revenue Allocation on the Performance of Local Government Area in Nigeria using Awka South Local Government Area as a case study. The peculiarity of this work centers on the performance of direct statutory revenue allocation to Nigerian local government which has for long gained recommendation of most committee in local government administration, seminar and workshop for the importance of local government system. What prompt me to write on this topic because local government as the third tier of government is the government at grassroot. It is the government that is nearer to the masses and as well knows their problems. The federal and state government can propagate their polictes and programs through the local government. They are charged with numerous responsibilities that is provision of rural roads and other infrastructures. As a result various commission and technical committee were appointed to review the revenue allocation formula in Nigeria so that local government will have a reasonable share that will enable them carryout their function of providing service to the masses. Four research questions and four research hypotheses guided the study. A total sample size of eighty staff and there were both senior and junior staff of two local government area were randomly selected. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The method of data analysis adopted in this study is descriptive method of analyzing data, especially the simple percentage (%). The hypothesis of 0.05 level of significance was used and simple regression on the statistical package for social sciences (spss)was used to test the hypotheses. It was observed that there will be more effective participation of local government in rural development f the statute revenue allocation is directly centered to them. Moreover these will make the local governm'nt viable and will be able to provide services to the grassroot level which is the main aim of creatii'zg local government.
