ABSTRACT

The study is an attempt to investigate the effect of agricultural import substitution on economic . growth in Nigeria. The study examined the relationship between agricultural import substitution and economic growth in Nigeria and examined the long nm relationship between agricultural import substitution and economic growth in Nigeria. The study estimated a multiple regression model with growth of GDP as the dependent variable and trade openness, exchange rate. external debt and foreign direct investment as the independent variables. The study found that there-is a significant relationship between agricultural import substitution and economic grow th in Nigeria. Further finding reveals that there is a long run relationship between agricultural import substitution and economic growth in Nigeria. The study established that looking inward for this raw material will spur the local production and create a market for the local commodity at home and in the international market. The study recommended that government should not avoid importation totally since the result shows that positive effect of agricultural importation on economic growth The study further recommends that government should take agriculture "< production, sales exportation very serious in order to enhance the growth of the economy.
