ABSTRACT

Edible vaccines represent a groundbreaking innovation in immunization strategies, offering an alternative to traditional needle-based vaccines. They are produced by genetically engineering edible plants to express antigens, which, when consumed, trigger an immune response in the human body. This seminar examines the concept of edible vaccines, their mechanism of action, benefits, challenges, and potential applications. Edible vaccines address issues such as high production costs, cold storage requirements, and needle-associated risks. However, challenges such as antigen stability, dosage control, and public acceptance persist. Current developments in biotechnology have led to edible vaccines targeting diseases such as cholera, hepatitis B, and rotavirus, with promising results in trials. This paper explores their role in improving global health and discusses ethical and regulatory considerations for widespread adoption. The future of edible vaccines lies in advancements in genetic engineering and public health policies, aiming to revolutionize disease prevention globally.
