ABSTRACT

This study investigated the economics of artisanal fin fish production in Magbon-Alade and Orimedu at ibeju Lekki local government Area of Lagos State. Cross sectional data were used. A total of 119 fishermen where randomly selected and interviewed for the study. The survey aims among others to determine the socio economic characteristics of the fishermen, to compute the cost and returns of fish production, to determine the problems encountered by the fishermen, the resource use efficiency and proffering solution and policy recommendations based on the findings of this work. The data collected were analysed by the use of simple statistical techniques such as percentages, averages, frequencies, profit function and regression analysis. The result of the profit function revealed that a profit of#156,948.2 was obtained in 6 months, showing that the enterprise is profitable. The efficiency of resource use showed that capital outlay, number of nets used for the catch and the horse power for the engine were being overutilised while labour was underutilised. The problems involved in fin fish production were lack of credit facilities, no fund for investment, high cost of fuel, no storage facility, high cost of inputs and no market.
