ABSTRACT
A Simplified downdraft gasifier system for generating wood
gas in emergency using charcoal and Sawdust as test fuel" was designed and
fabricated in order to provide a fast alternative source of waste to energy
conversion technique. Gasification is a thermochemical process which converts
solid biomass into a mixture of combustible gases. The project design was
achieved by incorporating some characteristics of Imbert throat design to the
reactor core of the cross-draft gasifier. The material used for this project
was selected based on thermal conductivity and heat exchange rate. The frame of
the gasifier was made of mild steel plate having dimensions (463mm length x
275mm width x 220mm diameter). The fabricated simplified downdraft gasifier
comprised of the heating unit, biomass conversion unit and the gas control
unit. The units made use of rankine cycle for heating process vapour
compression cycle for gas cooling process and principle of heating coil or
traditional heat source. The result of the analysis carried out showed the
efficiency (n) and the coefficient of performance (C.O.P.)Rof the system to be
90.06% and 9.67 respectively. The temperature obtained from the combustion
chamber and cold chamber is (800-25) °C and (775 —10) °C respectively. Charcoal
and sawdust are used as a feed stock in the gasifier. Performance of the
gasifier with feed stock is checked and their result tabulated. It was seen
that charcoal is to be fixed and sawdust gradual increased at regular interval
in weighted proportions of the feed mixture to generate producer gas having
higher heating value of 4341 .2KJ/Kg.
