ABSTRACT
One ofthe basic needs ofhumans is electricity
andfor electricity to be available, a source of generating electricity needs to
be made available. The purpose ofthis project is to design and construct a 5KVA
solar powered Inverter at afrequency of50Hz. This device is constructed with
locally sourced components and materials ofregulated standards. The basic
principle of its operation is a simple conversion of 12V DCfrom a batteiy using
integrated circuits and semiconductors at afrequency of50Hz, to a 220VAC across
the windings ofa transformer. An additional power supply to the public power
supply with the same power output is thus provided at an affordable price.
Solar inverter converts the variable direct current (DC) output of a
photovoltaic (PV) solar panel into a utility frequency alternating current (AC)
that can be fed into a commercial electrical grid or used by a local, off-grid
electrical network. It is a critical component in a photovoltaic system,
allowing the use ofordinary ACpowered equipment. In solar inverter, Solar
panels produce direct electricity with the help of electrons that are
movingfrom negative to positive direction. Most ofthe appliances that we use at
home work on alternative current. This AC is created by the constant back
andforth of the electrons from negative to positive. In AC electricity the
voltage can be adjusted according to the use ofthe appliance. As solar panels
only produce Direct current the solar inverter is used to convert the DC to AC
