ABSTRACT
The
critical period of weed interference in two maturity groups of soybean ( early
and medium) was examined in this study. Four varieties, two early and two
medium maturing varieties were used. Field trial was laid out in the year 2010
using a split-plot in randomized complete block design. Soybean· plots were
initially kept weed-free for 0,12,24, 36 and 48 days after crop emergence (DAE)
· 8 after which they were left weedy for the rest of the season and
weed-infested for 0,12,24,36 and 48 DAE then kept weed-free for the rest of the
season. Soybean yield increased with increasing period of weed free condition
while it was reduced by increasing duration of weed infested condition. There
was general reduction in seed yield in plots that were kept weedy throughout
the period when compared to plots that were kept weed free throughout the
period. The result shows that soybean fields must be kept weed-free between
8-36 DAE in order to prevent > 10% accepTable seed yield loss (ASYL). The
reduction in seed yield as a result of weed interference was associated with a
simultaneous reduction in plant dry matter content, number of pods/plant,
number of branches, seed size I 00-seed weight, number of leaves, plant height,
and other growth and yield associated traits.
