ABSTRACT
Cathodic Protection
of Pipeline Corrosion with Galvanic Anode was carefully and successfully
carried out. A detailed soil analysis within the premises of the Work and
Services Department of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike was
carried out to establish the presence of conditions necessary for corrosion to
take place within the area(s) asterised. The quantity of Anode required to
protect a 2m long 4mm diameter pipe was calculated and achieved. The design
parameter for the developed cathodic protection system were; total current;
anode current; protection voltage; soil PH; and the soil resistivity test. At
the end of ten weeks, a potential readings -1080 mV was obtained; pipe
protection current was 0.0076mA; Anode current of 0.0096mV; the soil PH and
soil resistivity test values(s) were 5.77 and 21.51 2m respectively. The
protection potential of (-890mV to -l080mV) obtained are in the range of
(-850mV to - 11 50mV) for a protected mild steel pipe. From the results, it can
be concluded that, SACP is an effective and efficient means of corrosion
control. The bill of quantity of this work is put at #130,200:00K (One hundred
and thirty thousand, two hundred naira only).
