ABSTRACT
This study analyses the causes of
bank distress and their effect in Nigerian banking industry from (1990-2011 ).
The following objectives were made to, ascertain the causes of distress in the
Nigerian banking industry, ascertain the effect of bank credit and cash reserve
ratio as causes of bank distress on the banking industry, and to assess the
effect of inflation and exchange rates as causes of bank distress on the
banking industry. The study made use of secondary data. Data was analyzed using
percentage and compound tables and multiple regression was used to test the
hypotheses and the result showed that credit have been a major problem causing
distress in the banking industry. The conclusion derived on the testing of
hypotheses shows that bank credit has a significant effect on the banking
industry performance. It was therefore recommended that strong emphasis should
be placed on adequate and workable corporate governance practice in the banking
sector; they should also avoid investing in interest bearing assets even if
this means foregoing lucrative short-term investment opportunities. This will
not only ensure financial stability in the time of financial distress but also
increase their credibility with their depositors.
