An Evaluation Of The Determinants Of Bank Profitability: Evidence From Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria

This research
work evaluates the determinants of bank profitability; Evidence from deposit
money banks in Nigeria. The study used a panel of deposit money banks'
financial statements from 2007-2011. The major objective of this study is to
examine the profitability behavior of deposit money banks by providing
empirical evidence on indicators of profitability in deposit money banks for
the period 2007-2011 with evidence from eight focal Nigerian banks.The study
employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation procedure and Pearson's
correlation analysis to examine factors that have contnbuted to deposit money
bank's profitability level over the period of observation. The key result is
that the effect of concentration is positive, which provides evidence in
support of the structure-conduct-performance theory, thereby showing that size
and market structure are of paramount importance to deposit money banks'
profitability. The paper recommends among other things that deposit money banks
should choose and employ appropriate capital structure that can increase their earnings
per share, reduce staff costs and government should allow tax cut in the
profitability level of deposit money banks.
