ABSTRACT
Six (6) accessions comprising two (2) local types and four (4) breeding lines of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L) Moench) were studied in a randomized complete block design with three (3) replicates to determine their performance under Umudike environmental conditions in 2006 wet season, at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike experimental farm. Analysis of variance showed significant difference at 5% probability level with respect to the plant height; Number of pods/plant, pod length and fruit pod yield. Linear correlation analysis revealed positive and significant association (P<0.05) between plant height, number of leaves/plants, number of buds/plant, number of flowers/plant, number pods/plant with fruit pod yield. With respect to yield all the accessions performed well, but Ola 99/7, and Ola 99/3 (Breeding lines) and Akupia (local type) with fresh pod yield of 2160.50, 3522.60 and 3024 .69kgha 1, respectively performed significantly (P<O.05) better than others. Ola 99/3 fresh pod yield which is well above the fresh pod yield recorded for okra in the Tropics could be developed into a variety and released to farmers in Umudike for increased Okra production. The prospect of cropping twice in a year with these dwarf and shorter life span accessions was also discussed.
