ABSTRACT

This study examined the place of additional income generation patterns in addressing the issue of poor funding in Nigerian academic libraries, with focus on the library of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. Three (3) objectives guded the study. A combination of the case study and descriptive survey method was adopted. A study population of 56 library staff was used. The complete census sampling technique was adopted, which implied the adoption of the entire population as respondents. The researchers'-made questionnaire was the major instrument for data collection. Administration and retrieval of the instrument was done on face-to-face basis and on the spot. This gave a response rate of 10096. Data generated was analyzed using the descriptive and inferential statistics of means scores and standard deviation and presented using frequency tables. A criterion mean of 2.5 was used to ascertain the agreement and disagreement of responses. Result shows the presence of funding sources, which mostly lies onĀ· the allocation of the parent institution with minimal or complete disappearance of fee-based services and the 10% NUC recommendation. Numerous additional income generation patterns deplorable in the Library studied were identified. These patterns were found to be beneficial to academic library services, especially in solving the funding challenges of the libraries. Based on the findings, the study recommended that academic libraries and other libraries should make effort to adopt means of generating additional income and shun the sole dependence on the parent institution for all financial matters. Additionally, they are expected to make the provision of relevant services that can be fee-based a priority so as to generate additional income for running the library, among other things.
